JCPSP History :

JCPSP – A leader in biomedical journalism :

Scientific publications of a country reflect the scientific progress and development of that country and journals play an important role for dissemination and exchange of the information. Although as many as 46 medical journals and magazines were published in the country, there was hardly any journal meant for and dedicated to research. With this aim and objective, the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan launched its own bio-medical research journal, JCPSP in 1991 to fill this vacuum.

JCPSP started as a quarterly publication from the Department of Medical Education and set up its editorial office there. Its first Chief Editor was Professor Fazal Elahi who was also Director of Medical Education in CPSP. Dr. Shahida Zaidi and Dr. Shabih H. Zaidi were editors. JCPSP’s first inaugural issue was published in the last quarter (October-December) of 1991. The Founders’ objective was to promote and disseminate evidence-based medical research as well as educate and promote medical writing skill in its postgraduate trainees and doctors to bring about greater awareness and understanding of research in the country.

The JCPSP office is situated on the 3rd floor of the main CPSP building and the Printing Press is housed in a separate building and is functioning since 1993. For the preceding eight years, the CPSP concentrated on improving the journal’s research contents and peer review process and expanded it to a monthly journal in 1999, reaching a wider spectrum of readership throughout the country and the world.

With its primary aim and objective of promotion and dissemination of medical research, JCPSP publishes research work, contributed locally and from abroad, after peer-review, as original articles, case reports, review articles, commentaries, articles on medical education, new technology, letters to the editor and editorials covering core biomedical health science subjects, basic medical sciences and emerging community problems – environment, health and population – prepared in accordance with the “Uniform requirements for submission to bio-medical journals” as approved by the International Committee of Medical Journals’ Editors (ICMJE), USA.

The Editorial Board of the Journal is headed by Professor Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, President of the CPSP, and consists of national and international members of high profile medical personalities of USA, UK, Canada and Sudan.

Since becoming monthly in 1999, the journal concentrated on quality of its contents, editorial work and production with regularity and timely publications. These efforts paid off and in the year 2002, the journal was selected and included in Index Medicus and MEDLINE ---the largest databased indexing agency in the world, which is also known as the mother of all indexing agencies. JCPSP thus became the second bio-medical monthly from Pakistan to be included in the coveted Index Medicus and MEDLINE, which is managed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, USA. Journals with high impact factors are usually indexed by Index Medicus/MEDLINE, which disseminate journals’ contents globally through its website PubMed.

JCPSP has developed a team of dedicated workers. They fastened their belts to embark on the mission of achieving yet another goal ---the Impact Factor of Thomson-Reuters formerly known as ISI (Institute of Scientific Information), Philadelphia, USA. Meeting the stringent criteria of quality, regularity in publication and timely dispatch of journals to the Thomson Reuters for its continuous evaluation was a daunting and challenging task. A pool of good number of articles was needed to embark on the mission. Concerted efforts were made by JCPSP staff and their perseverance and hard work paid off and resulted in a sufficient pool of articles in hand which set the whole direction. Advance and in-time publication of Journals and its timely dispatch to the Thomson Reuters in Philadelphia was made for its continuous evaluation and its receipt was ensured which bore fruits and JCPSP received the much sought-after coveted Impact Factor in the 2009 Journal Citation Report (JCR) issued by Thomson Reuters/ISI. The Journal also received the 5-year Impact Factor in 2010 JCR and again an Impact Factor in 2011 JCR, which was the highest among its contemporary Pakistani bio-medical journals.

JCPSP is recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, which has categorized it in their highest “W” category list of journals. JCPSP is not only an Impact Factor journal by Thomson Reuters/ISI, its is also abstracted/indexed by Index Medicus/MEDLINE (NLM-USA), Embase/Excerpta Medica, SciVerse Scopus The Netherlands, Extra Med of London, EBSCO Publishing (USA), Index Copernicus (Poland), Gale/Cengage Learning, USA, CAB International, UK, Index Medicus for Eastern Mediterranean Region (IMEMR), Pak- MediNet and registered with International Serial Data System and Coden of American Chemical Society.

With a circulation of 8200 printed copies, the Journal has the largest circulation amongst all the other biomedical and scientific journals published from Pakistan. It is subscribed by and distributed among College Fellows, leading medical institutions, universities, libraries, and a sizable number of health professionals, researchers, and pharmaceutical firms.
